Drugs and Sex Crimes

Drugs and sex often go hand-in-hand. There are certain drugs that have become trendy among teens and young adults at clubs, parties, and "raves." These drugs, often referred to as "club drugs," include, but are not limited to, MDMA/Ecstasy, Rohypnol, GHB, and ketamine.

Producing both stimulant and psychedelic effects, MDMA/”ecstasy” is often taken as a party drug because it enables the person on it to dance, remain active for long periods of time and to feel euphoric. MDMA/ecstasy is usually ingested in tablet form, but can also be crushed and snorted, injected, or used in a suppository variety.

The tasteless and odorless depressants Rohypnol and GHB are sometimes taken voluntarily but are also regularly used in the commission of sexual assaults due to their ability to sedate and intoxicate without alarming someone that they have ingested a drug. Rohypnol is a sedative/tranquilizer and is legally available by prescription in over 50 countries outside of the United States and is widely available in neighboring Mexico, Colombia, and Europe.  Although typically taken orally in a pill form, Rohypnol has also been ground into a powder and snorted. Generally, when Rohypnol is utilized to perpetrate a sexual offense against another, Rohypnol (otherwise referred to as “Ruphies”) will be ground up and snuck into a person’s drink.

GHB is another popular “club drug” that comes in an odorless, colorless, liquid form or as a white powder.  Like Rohypnol, GHB is taken orally and is frequently combined with alcohol. In addition to being used to debilitate individuals for the commission of sexual assaults/rape, GHB is sometimes used by body builders for its alleged anabolic effects.

Finally, the use of ketamine/"special K", a tranquilizer most often used on animals, became popular when it was realized that large doses cause feelings similar to those associated with the use of PCP (i.e., dream-like states andhallucinations). The liquid form of ketamine can be injected, consumed in drinks, or added to smokable materials. The powder form can also be added to drinks, smoked, or dissolved and then injected. Some people are injecting ketamine intramuscularly as well.
