Drug Courts
A “Drug Court” is a special courtroom that exists in most courthouses which is charged with the responsibility of handling cases involving those who are considered “drug-addicted” offenders. Those people sent to drug court are generally multiple offenders and have a history of convictions for drug-related crimes. The drug courts put defendants through an extensive supervision and treatment program and monitor them frequently. The specifics will vary from courthouse to courthouse, and county to county, but each county’s program will typically be separated into phases, where the participant will earn more and more freedoms with the passage of time and successful completion of each phase. Sometimes a period of incarceration is required in addition to the drug court’s programs (i.e., AA, NA, rehabilitation, random drug testing, etc…). When the drug court program is successfully completed, the defendant’s case is generally dismissed.
